A Queer Georgian Yuletide: Handel's 'Messiah'

Harry will sing as part of a quartet in this delightful performance of the Messiah

As described by the Foundling Museum - “Handel – like many other baroque composers – constantly modified his Messiah to attract new audiences to the point where nearly a third of this work underwent revision during the composer’s lifetime. Les Bougies Baroque have reimagined this seminal work so that more of us can share in its power, particularly those at the fringes of society. Expect an evening of intellectually-informed fun. All you are required to do is leave your preconceptions at the door, fetch a libation from the bar, and come as yourself – with or without bells on!"

This event is part of A Queer Georgian Social Season, a series of LGBTQI+ events where history, the arts and queer culture combine, conceived and curated by Ian Peter Bugeja and Mark Francis-Vasey. Think Baroque music, historical performances, flute solos and… drag queens”

Berlioz and Friends Recital - Barnes Music Festival

Emma Roberts, Mezzo-soprano

Harry Grigg, Tenor

Nigel Foster, Piano

David Mildon, Speaker

‘Berlioz and Friends’ paints an atmospheric picture of the musical environment of mid-19th century Paris, a setting for intense, romantic music and largerthan-life characters. This vibrant world is depicted in a domestic setting through the songs of Hector Berlioz and his friends, including the pianist Franz Liszt and the opera singer Pauline Viardot, both noted celebrities of their day, and through the words of Berlioz himself, taken from his lively Memoirs and his book The Musical Madhouse (Les Grotesques de la Musique), in which he applies his often-caustic tongue to the musical foibles and eccentricities of his time.

Nigel Foster, renowned accompanist and Director of the London Song Festival, is joined by prize-winning soloists Emma Roberts and Harry Grigg, with stage and film actor David Mildon reading Berlioz’s own words.

The Burning Question is a new comic opera featuring a female pope who passes into the afterlife.

She expected a cosy retirement in paradise but the elevator going upwards gets stuck. It's a Day of Wrath! Her demonic manservant & her angelic maid are at a loss to know what to do.

What does Peter the Caretaker know? Does he hold the key to the plot? Accompanied by piano duet & a choir of heavenly voices, this is a satire that confronts the ridiculous, the sublime, love, death & comic opera all at the same time.

The production is choreographed in the lively style of commedia dell’arte while the music owes much to Italian opera & is performed by a superb young cast.

London Song Festival - Benjamin Britten and W H Auden

Charlotte Bowden – soprano

Harry Grigg – tenor

Nigel Foster – piano

David Mildon – speaker

Benjamin Britten and W H Auden’s relationship flourished on a musical level, resulting in numerous songs, many of which were written as direct responses to the emotional tensions both men experienced on a personal level. This concert tells their story through Britten’s songs and his own words from his letters and diaries, from their meeting in 1935 when both were working for the GPO Film Unit in London, through their experiences of both Britain and America, to their falling out in the 1940s. The programme incorporates every available voice and piano song they wrote together; On This Island, the Cabaret Songs and numerous individual songs including Fish in the unruffled lakes, Underneath the abject willow, Night covers up the rigid land, To lie flat on the back, When you’re feeling like expressing your affection, What’s in your mind, and The sun shines down, and selections from their other works including Ballad for Heroes, Hymn to St Cecilia, the Spring Symphony and the operetta Paul Bunyan. The programme features an arrangement by Griffin Candey for speaker and piano of one of their first collaborations, Night Mail, commissioned for this concert by the London Song Festival. The performers are soprano Charlotte Bowden (a Britten-Pears Young Artist and Glyndebourne Jerwood Young Artist), tenor Harry Grigg (winner of 2021 Maureen Lehane Vocal Awards), pianist Nigel Foster and speaker David Mildon (‘Son’ in the BAFTA-winning Happy Birthday Grandad, leading roles at Hackney Empire, Meunier Chocolate Factory and Jermyn Street and Soho theatres) reading Britten’s commentaries and reflections on the songs and about his friendship with Auden and life in general.
